Two of Wall Street’s most closely watched billionaire investors took sharply different approaches to Big Tech during the first quarter of 2026.
Bill Ackman revealed that his hedge fund, Pershing Square, built a new position in Microsoft after the stock declined earlier this year. Ackman said investors were underestimating the long-term value of Microsoft’s AI investments and its dominant Microsoft 365 software ecosystem.
At the same time, Ackman reduced and later exited most of his position in Alphabet, according to regulatory filings and sources familiar with the matter.
Meanwhile, Daniel Loeb took the opposite side of the trade. His hedge fund, Third Point, sold roughly 925,000 shares of Microsoft during the quarter, fully exiting a position it had held since late 2022.
Instead, Loeb increased exposure to Alphabet by purchasing 175,000 shares during the quarter, signaling confidence in Google’s AI and advertising business despite broader uncertainty around major technology stocks.
Both investors also initiated new stakes in Meta Platforms, reflecting continued interest in artificial intelligence opportunities across the “Magnificent Seven” group of mega-cap tech companies.
The contrasting moves highlight how even elite investors remain divided on the future winners of the AI boom. While some funds are leaning into Microsoft’s enterprise AI leadership, others see stronger upside in Alphabet’s search, cloud, and AI ecosystem.
The filings also show a broader trend among institutional investors: rather than buying every major AI-related company indiscriminately, hedge funds are becoming increasingly selective as valuations rise and competition intensifies.
