Partners Group Sticks With Wealth Management Strategy Despite Fund Withdrawal Concerns

Partners Group says it remains committed to expanding its private wealth business despite a sharp selloff in its shares following restrictions on withdrawals from two evergreen funds.

The company's stock fell about 16% on Thursday after it announced that withdrawals from two funds had exceeded the permitted quarterly limit, triggering redemption restrictions. Shares later recovered part of those losses.

Withdrawal Limits Trigger Investor Concerns

Partners Group capped withdrawals after redemption requests surpassed the funds' 5% quarterly withdrawal limit, a mechanism commonly used in private-market investment vehicles to manage liquidity.

The move raised concerns among investors about liquidity conditions in the private markets industry, which has faced growing scrutiny as interest rates remain elevated and exits have slowed.

Majority of Clients Remain Institutional

Chairman Steffen Meister emphasized that the affected products represent only a portion of the firm's overall business.

According to Meister, approximately 80% of Partners Group's clients are institutional investors, including pension funds, insurers, and other large organizations.

The withdrawal restrictions apply specifically to products aimed at wealthy private clients rather than the firm's core institutional investment business.

Private Wealth Expansion Continues

Despite the recent turbulence, Partners Group said it has no intention of abandoning its strategy of attracting high-net-worth investors.

Management indicated that the company will continue expanding in the private wealth segment, although it plans to review both the distribution channels used to market these products and the overall size of its evergreen funds.

Key Takeaway

The withdrawal limits highlight the liquidity challenges that can arise in private-market investment products during periods of elevated redemption requests. However, Partners Group maintains that the issue is confined to specific retail-focused funds and does not alter its broader growth strategy in private wealth management. The company's leadership continues to view wealthy individual investors as an important long-term growth opportunity.
