Hindustan Zinc has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute to undertake a 250-hectare ecological restoration project at its Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex in Rajasthan.
The project, located in the Chittorgarh district, aims to transform industrial land into a self-sustaining ecosystem through large-scale plantation of native trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses.
One of the Largest Industrial Green Cover Projects
According to the company, the initiative is expected to become one of the largest green cover developments within industrial premises in India.
TERI will provide technical expertise for:
- Ecological planning and restoration design
- Selection of native and climate-adaptive plant species
- Management of invasive species
- Restoration of water bodies and aquatic ecosystems
- Long-term maintenance and ecosystem protection
Building on Existing Restoration Success
The new project expands an ongoing partnership between Hindustan Zinc and TERI.
The company said restoration work covering 22.25 hectares at the Jarofix Yard has already been completed in two phases. The area, used for managing zinc smelting residue, was rehabilitated using TERI's Mycorrhiza technology and includes nearly 56,400 native trees.
In addition, a 6-hectare biodiversity park is currently being developed on top of a secured landfill within the Chanderiya complex.

The restoration initiative forms part of Hindustan Zinc's Sustainability Goal 2030 and broader ESG strategy, which focuses on:
- Biodiversity conservation
- Land restoration
- Water stewardship
- Carbon reduction and decarbonisation
- Sustainable industrial operations

The company also highlighted several ongoing environmental initiatives, including:
- A 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement
- Increased water recycling and conservation efforts
- Expansion of electric and LNG-powered transportation fleets
- Continued investment in low-carbon operations

While the project does not directly affect near-term earnings, it strengthens Hindustan Zinc's environmental credentials and long-term ESG profile. Large-scale land restoration and renewable energy investments are increasingly important factors for global investors evaluating mining and metals companies.
