China’s market regulator announced that BYD (002594) will recall 88,981 Qin PLUS DM-i plug-in hybrid vehicles due to potential battery-related safety issues. The affected cars, produced between January 2021 and September 2023, may experience limited power output caused by inconsistencies in battery pack production. In extreme cases, vehicles could lose the ability to drive in pure electric mode.
This recall follows BYD’s largest recall to date and is part of a broader pattern of quality and safety challenges for the EV maker. Earlier this year, BYD has recalled over 210,000 vehicles, including:
- Nearly 7,000 plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs
- More than 115,000 Tang and Yuan Pro vehicles in October due to design defects and battery risks
- Nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs in September 2024 due to steering control unit faults that posed fire hazards
The recalls come amid sliding sales and profits: BYD’s October 2025 sales fell 12% year-over-year, following a 33% drop in Q3 profits.
Implication: While BYD remains a leading EV manufacturer, recurring recalls highlight ongoing production and safety challenges that could affect consumer confidence and brand reputation.
