CME Globex Halts Trading Amid Data Center Cooling Issue, Bitcoin Futures Impacted

The CME Group temporarily suspended trading across its Globex platform, affecting a wide range of futures and options contracts tied to stocks, commodities, and cryptocurrencies. The outage was caused by a cooling issue at CyrusOne data centres, according to a CME statement.

“Support is working to resolve the issue in the near term and will advise clients of Pre-Open details as soon as they are available,” the CME team noted.

Scope of the Outage

CyrusOne operates over 55 data centres across the US, Europe, and Japan, and the outage impacted all contracts on Globex. Traders reported that crude oil, palm oil, and crypto futures, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, were halted during the interruption.

One anonymous trader described the halt as a “nightmare,” highlighting the disruption caused to active sessions, particularly in Asia, where liquidity was already thin following the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.

“It’s been a very slow day here in Asia after the Thanksgiving holiday and this hasn’t helped at all, more so given there is interest to transact at the end of what has been a volatile month,” said market analyst Tony Sycamore.

Impact on Bitcoin and Crypto Futures

Bitcoin briefly fell 0.55% to $90,896 in 24 hours, contrasting with a weekly gain of 8.32%. Analysts attribute the slight drop to $13.4 billion in BTC options expiring on November 28, favoring bearish bets.

During the 24-hour period, BTC tested $91,800 resistance three times but failed to hold, triggering automated sell orders. At press time, Bitcoin was trading around $91,124.

Crypto traders were among the hardest hit during the CME outage, as futures contracts on major cryptocurrencies were offline while volatility remained elevated.

Next Steps

CME continues to work with CyrusOne to resolve the cooling issue and resume normal operations. Traders are awaiting updates regarding pre-open schedules and guidance on any stuck or affected trades.
