Malaysia Detains Former Senior Aide to Prime Minister Over Bribery Allegations

Malaysia’s anti-corruption agency has detained Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, a former senior political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, for further investigation amid bribery allegations. Shamsul, who resigned earlier this week, was taken into custody after questioning by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), according to Chief Commissioner Azam Baki.

MACC plans to apply for a court order on Saturday to extend Shamsul’s detention beyond the standard 24 hours. The agency will also seek to keep businessman Albert Tei, who claims to have accused Shamsul of bribery and was questioned on the same day, in custody.

Chief Commissioner Azam stated that the investigation is expected to be completed within the week so the case can be submitted to the attorney-general’s chambers for a swift decision, though he did not specify potential charges.

Shamsul, a senior member of Anwar’s People’s Justice Party, had resigned citing an attempt to attack him with damaging allegations, and pledged to defend himself. Tei’s lawyer, Zaid Malek, said he was unaware of the specific offences his client is suspected of.
