Toronto Blue Jays Make Splashy Offseason Move, Signing Dylan Cease

The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a seven-year, $210 million deal with free-agent pitcher Dylan Cease, marking the largest contract ever for a Blue Jays free agent and the team’s second-largest overall behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s $500 million extension.

Cease, 29, brings elite strikeout ability and a proven track record, having logged 200+ strikeouts in each of the past five seasons and earning two top-five Cy Young finishes. Despite a challenging 2025 season (8-12 record, 4.55 ERA), the Blue Jays are betting on his high ceiling to anchor a rotation featuring Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, José Berríos, Eric Lauer, and Trey Yesavage.

The signing underscores Toronto’s aggressive offseason strategy, following Bieber’s $16 million player option, and complements potential moves in high-leverage relief roles and decisions regarding Bo Bichette.

By landing Cease, the Blue Jays are signaling their intent to build on their 2025 World Series run and assert themselves as one of the most ambitious teams in the American League East, positioning Toronto as a top destination for free agents and a serious contender heading into 2026.
