Marburg Virus Death Toll Rises to Six in Ethiopia

26 November 2025 – Addis Ababa: The Marburg virus outbreak in Ethiopia has claimed six lives, the Ethiopian Press Agency reported on Wednesday, citing the health ministry.

The outbreak was first confirmed on 14 November, with three deaths reported three days later. Of the 11 confirmed cases, six have died, while the remaining five patients are receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have isolated 349 individuals who were suspected of having contact with infected patients, releasing 119 after completing the required surveillance period.

Marburg virus, part of the same family as Ebola, can cause severe headaches and hemorrhaging. Past outbreaks in Africa have reported fatality rates of up to 80%, typically within eight to nine days of symptom onset.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely as they implement containment measures.
