Abu Dhabi Investment Council Triples Bitcoin Exposure Amid Volatility

The Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC) significantly increased its Bitcoin holdings during Q3 2025, nearly tripling its exposure through BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin fund (IBIT). The investment arm of Mubadala Investment Company views Bitcoin as a digital equivalent of gold, signaling continued institutional interest in the UAE’s crypto market.

Institutional Buying During a Volatile Quarter

ADIC boosted its IBIT holdings from 2.4 million shares at the start of Q3 to almost 8 million by September 30, valuing the position at approximately $520 million. This move occurred just before Bitcoin reached its all-time high of $125,100 on October 5, although it has since retraced below $90,000. IBIT shares closed Q3 at $65 and briefly rose to $71 following the Bitcoin surge.

Impact of Recent Bitcoin Price Decline

Despite ADIC’s bullish positioning, the ETF has fallen alongside Bitcoin’s price, closing at $50.71—around 23% lower than the end of Q3. The decline coincided with IBIT experiencing its largest daily outflows since its January 2024 launch, totaling $523.2 million. Analysts, including Eric Balchunas, described the ETF as going through an “ugly stretch,” though year-to-date flows remain strong at +$25 billion.

Significance for Institutional Adoption

Market commentators highlighted ADIC’s move as a strong signal of institutional conviction. Crypto investment platform M2 treasury manager Zayed Aleem called it “fantastic to see such institutional conviction,” emphasizing the UAE’s growing role as a global hub for digital assets. Analyst MartyParty noted that the position reflects a strategic bet on Bitcoin as a store of value.

Outlook for Bitcoin and IBIT

While analysts remain divided on Bitcoin’s near-term trajectory, some, like Bitcoin analyst VICTOR, suggest that the current drawdown represents a “close your eyes and bid type of range,” implying potential buying opportunities amid market volatility. ADIC’s sizeable position underscores the continued appetite among institutional investors despite short-term price swings, signaling confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term potential.
