Remarks at Ambassador’s Swearing-In:
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump indicated that a trade agreement with India is in its final stages. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador to India, Trump mentioned that tariffs on India would be reduced soon.
Trump stated, “We are currently negotiating a new trade deal with India. They don’t like me much right now, but they will soon. We are very close to a fair agreement. They are skilled negotiators, so Sergio, you will need to pay attention. A deal beneficial to all is nearly finalized.”
Further Clarification at the Oval Office:
After the ceremony, speaking to journalists in the Oval Office, Trump confirmed that the trade deal with India is imminent. On the topic of tariffs, he added, “As trade with Russia decreases, tariffs on India will also be lowered at the right time.”
Progress in Bilateral Talks:
Earlier, on November 5, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that discussions on the India–US trade agreement were progressing positively. While sensitive issues may take time, negotiations were ongoing.
Both countries aim to finalize the first phase of the bilateral trade deal by the end of 2025. So far, five rounds of talks have been completed, including a virtual discussion on October 23 between negotiators from both sides.
Projected Impact:
The agreement aims to increase bilateral trade from the current $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030. Minister Goyal participated in high-level talks in the US in September, and a US delegation led by Assistant Trade Representative Brandon Lynch held “positive and forward-looking” discussions with India’s Ministry of Commerce in New Delhi.
This deal is considered a key step toward expanding global trade and strengthening economic partnership between India and the United States.
