Taiwan Issues Evacuations Ahead of Typhoon Fung-wong

Taiwan on Tuesday issued a land warning and evacuated over 3,000 people as Typhoon Fung-wong approached, bringing heavy rain to the island’s mountainous east coast.

The typhoon, weakened after passing through the Philippines, where it caused 18 fatalities, is forecast to make landfall near Kaohsiung on the southwestern coast on Wednesday. It is then expected to cross southern Taiwan and exit into the Pacific along the sparsely populated eastern counties of Taitung and Hualien.

President Lai Ching-te urged citizens to avoid mountains, coastal areas, and other dangerous zones. Evacuations have already begun in Guangfu, a town in Hualien that experienced deadly floods in September. A total of 3,337 residents in four counties and cities have been moved to safer locations.

Authorities also closed schools and offices in Hualien and neighboring Yilan. The northern city of Hsinchu, home to chipmaker TSMC, is not expected to be directly affected.

In the Philippines, most of the 18 fatalities were caused by landslides in the northern Cordilleras, with two people reported missing and 28 injured, according to civil defence official Raffy Alejandro.
