Asia-Pacific markets were mixed on Tuesday as investors digested Wall Street’s overnight rally fueled by renewed artificial intelligence (AI) optimism and growing confidence that a potential U.S. government shutdown could be avoided soon.
On Wall Street, Nvidia led the surge with a 5.8% gain, lifting the S&P 500. Other major tech names followed suit — Alphabet (Google’s parent) advanced 4%, and Microsoft added 1.9%, breaking its eight-day losing streak.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index climbed 0.91%, while the Topix added 0.52%, driven by AI-related stocks. SoftBank Group rose 3.57%, and Renesas Electronics gained 4.35%.
Financial conglomerate Orix increased 0.49% after announcing a $2.5 billion private equity partnership with Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) to invest in Japanese companies focusing on business succession, privatization, and carve-outs. Orix and QIA will contribute 60% and 40%, respectively.
Sony Group shares jumped over 6% following strong second-quarter earnings and a $648 million share buyback announcement. The company’s operating profit rose 10% year-on-year, supported by its Imaging & Sensing Solutions and Music segments.
In South Korea, the Kospi index advanced 1.94%, marking a second day of gains as the AI rally extended. Samsung Electronics surged 4.97%, and SK Hynix gained 4.62%, while the Kosdaq was up 1.38%.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged higher by 0.25%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell 0.2% and China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.67%.
Notably, Chinese EV maker Xpeng soared as much as 15%, reaching its highest level since late 2022 after unveiling robotaxis and humanoid robots equipped with its own AI chips. This followed a 16% surge on Monday.
In India, the Nifty 50 was up 0.17%, while the Sensex remained flat during early trading.
