The S&P 500 is approaching a critical technical crossroads after last week's sharp selloff carried into this week, leaving investors focused on whether the index can hold above an important support level by Friday's close.

The benchmark index ended Tuesday at 7,386.65, almost exactly on a key Gann Line near 7,385. A Gann Line is a technical analysis tool that combines price and time to identify potential support and resistance levels where markets may reverse direction or change trend.

This particular level has become especially important because of its history. Throughout much of late 2024 and early 2025, the Gann Line acted as a strong resistance barrier, repeatedly preventing the S&P 500 from moving higher. In early May, however, the index finally broke above the line, turning former resistance into support—a development many technical analysts consider bullish.

Since then, the S&P 500 has tested this level several times and successfully held above it, including during pullbacks in May and again during the recent market weakness. Tuesday's session briefly pushed below the line before buyers stepped in, allowing the index to finish almost exactly at the support level.

The next few trading days could therefore prove decisive.

If the S&P 500 manages to finish the week above the Gann Line and then climb above its four-week moving average near 7,460, it would reinforce the bullish trend and increase the likelihood of another rally toward the record intraday high around 7,620. A successful breakout above that level could potentially open the door to new all-time highs.

On the other hand, if the index closes decisively below the Gann Line and subsequently falls beneath its 10-week moving average near 7,300, it would signal weakening momentum and raise the risk of a larger correction. In that scenario, technical analysts see the next major support zone near 7,000.
