Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia: AI-Powered “Truth” Platform to Rival Wikipedia

Elon Musk officially launched Grokipedia on Monday, an AI-driven, “truth-focused” alternative to Wikipedia, amid his ongoing criticism of Wikipedia’s editorial practices.

Musk stated via X that Grokipedia is fully open source, allowing anyone to use it at no cost, with its mission being “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” The platform currently hosts over 885,000 articles.

A notable difference has already been observed in content coverage. For example, the Grokipedia article on George Floyd emphasizes his criminal record in the first paragraph, whereas Wikipedia highlights that he was killed by a “white” police officer. Musk acknowledged the platform won’t be perfect but aims to strive toward complete accuracy.

The launch was briefly delayed as Musk paused to “purge out the propaganda.” The site initially crashed upon release but quickly became fully operational.

Grokipedia relies heavily on Grok AI to generate and moderate content, a shift from Wikipedia’s volunteer-driven editorial model combined with automated tools. Users can request changes to articles, but the AI makes the final decision, determining whether to accept or reject edits and providing explanations. Musk revealed that Grok generated roughly 1 million articles using substantial computing resources.

Musk has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia for alleged left-wing bias. Grokipedia’s article on Wikipedia references studies suggesting that right-leaning figures are depicted more negatively than left-leaning ones. Conversely, Wikipedia notes that Grokipedia may skew toward far-right perspectives aligned with Musk, highlighting omissions such as the exclusion of Musk’s controversial hand gesture from his Grokipedia entry.

The launch marks a major step in Musk’s broader push to reshape online information platforms with AI-driven tools, setting up a potential long-term rivalry with the established Wikipedia model.
