Denmark's largest cement producer and biggest carbon dioxide emitter, Aalborg Portland, has signed an agreement with the Danish Energy Agency to receive 16.5 billion Danish crowns ($2.55 billion) in subsidies for a major carbon capture and storage (CCS) project beginning in 2030. The project is a crucial part of Denmark's ambitious climate strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% compared with 1990 levels. Company CEO Soren Holm Christensen described the initiative as one of the largest industrial carbon-capture projects in Europe and a significant milestone for both Denmark and the broader European decarbonization effort.
Under the agreement, Aalborg Portland will receive 875 crowns for every ton of carbon dioxide captured, with annual subsidies potentially reaching 1.1 billion crowns over a 15-year period. The support will cover the entire carbon capture chain, including capture, transportation, and long-term storage. The facility is expected to capture up to 1.25 million tons of CO2 annually, accounting for more than half of Denmark's overall target of capturing 2.3 million tons of carbon emissions each year through its national CCS program.
The project addresses one of the most challenging areas of industrial decarbonization. Cement manufacturing is responsible for approximately 8% of global industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Emissions are generated not only from the fossil fuels used to heat cement kilns but also through the chemical process of converting limestone into clinker, the key ingredient in cement. Because these emissions are difficult to eliminate through conventional methods, carbon capture technology is increasingly viewed as one of the few viable solutions for reducing emissions in the cement sector.
Several major industry players will contribute to the project. Air Liquide will provide the carbon-capture technology, while Harbour Energy will manage the transportation and storage infrastructure. Together, the partners aim to create a large-scale system capable of significantly reducing emissions from one of Denmark's most carbon-intensive industrial facilities.
Supporters of carbon capture technology, including the International Energy Agency, argue that CCS will play an essential role in achieving global climate targets, particularly for industries where emissions are difficult to eliminate. However, critics continue to question the technology's economic viability and argue that widespread adoption could prolong dependence on fossil fuels. Despite the debate, Aalborg Portland's project represents one of the largest commitments to industrial carbon capture in Europe and highlights the growing role CCS is expected to play in the transition toward a lower-carbon economy.
