Copa Airlines has no plans to hedge fuel costs despite recent oil-price volatility linked to the conflict involving Iran. CEO Pedro Heilbron said the airline will continue absorbing higher fuel expenses through pricing adjustments and its strong financial position.
Heilbron noted that Copa has not used fuel hedging for more than a decade and sees no reason to change its strategy. While higher fuel costs have led to fare increases, the airline has only been able to pass part of the added expense on to customers due to competitive pressures and demand sensitivity.
The airline's strong liquidity and conservative balance sheet provide flexibility to navigate market volatility. Heilbron added that travel demand across Latin America remains healthy, supported by stronger regional currencies, particularly in Brazil.
Copa also continues to expand its fleet and recently agreed to purchase up to 60 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The order, scheduled for delivery between 2030 and 2034, will support both growth and fleet renewal, while the company evaluates future aircraft mix options, including the larger MAX 10 variant.
