Chinese tech giant Baidu (BIDU) on Tuesday unveiled a suite of artificial intelligence products built on OpenClaw, an open-source framework that enables agents to perform complex, multi-step tasks with minimal human input—going beyond traditional chatbots.
The “Lobster” Ecosystem
Baidu introduced a family of AI agents nicknamed “lobsters”, spanning:
- Desktop software: DuMate desktop assistant
- Mobile platforms: RedClaw for smartphones
- Cloud services: DuClaw, enabling agent deployment without hardware configuration
- Smart-home devices: Xiaodu speakers with OpenClaw integration for voice-activated multi-device tasks
These agents are designed to execute tasks such as video editing, creating presentations, conducting research, or even ordering coffee—seamlessly operating across multiple apps and devices.
OpenClaw’s rapid adoption globally has fostered a growing community of Chinese users who describe themselves as “raising lobsters,” reflecting the idea that agents improve over time through feedback and training.
Industry Adoption
Other Chinese tech giants, including Alibaba (BABA) and Tencent (700), have embraced OpenClaw-based AI, rolling out their own products in search of new revenue streams.
Speaking at the event, Baidu Executive Vice President Shen Dou said:
"It could become an operating-system-level capability for a new era, unlocking almost all hardware and breaking down the barriers between devices."
Shen cautioned that the technology is still maturing:
"This lobster is still not perfect. It makes mistakes, takes detours and sometimes even complicates simple things."
Strategic Context
Baidu’s push into AI agents comes as it seeks to regain ground in China’s AI chatbot market. After early success in 2023 with its ChatGPT competitor, rival chatbots such as Bytedance’s Doubao, Tencent’s Yuanbao, and Alibaba’s Qwen have surged in popularity.
Zac Cheah, co-founder of Singapore-based Pundi AI, noted:
"Chinese users are comfortable with super-app ecosystems, and products such as Doubao, Tencent Yuanbao, and Qwen have already familiarized the public with AI at scale."
Baidu aims to leverage OpenClaw to create a unified AI ecosystem spanning desktop, mobile, cloud, and smart-home devices, tapping into growing domestic interest in autonomous digital agents.
